Imagine a farm three-quarters the size of California that requires the amount of water used in Idaho and Texas combined. Instead of eating the food produced on this farm, however, it’s loaded onto a semitruck every 20 seconds and brought straight to a landfill.
This, according to Dana Gunders, executive director of the nonprofit ReFED, is the current situation in America: The group estimates that between 30% and 40% of all food goes to waste. It’s also the focus of Hellmann’s first ever Super Bowl ad, scheduled to air Sunday, Feb. 7.
