As more people stay home to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, more household trash is piling up.

Since mid-March, Fairfax County and the City of Alexandria have reported an increase of up to 40% in residential trash tonnage.

Residents are now being asked to minimize waste, as the increase in trash is putting a strain on regional waste management systems.

As collection crews continue to provide this essential service, they are asking residents minimize waste and follow some guidelines to help keep them safe.
