Books, shmooks: Your library card can get you a drone, violin or sewing machine

Read the full story in the Orange County Register.

Need a wrench? Some vegetable seeds for the garden? Maybe a ukulele?

You may be able to skip a trip to the store and borrow them from a public library instead.

At the Yorba Linda Library, patrons can check out a day pack with a compass, binoculars and local trail guides. The A.K. Smiley Library in Redlands lets people take home paintings to decorate their home. The Placentia Library has a binder full of laminated pages showing 37 items that can be checked out, including a bubble machine, commercial kitchen mixer and drones.

It’s all part of a trend among the former book strongholds of adding nontraditional resources to help people learn or have fun, make their lives easier and meet community needs.
