For Lowell gym, there’s no place like (new, safe) foam

The bouncy foam pits at Walker’s Gymnastics & Dance are designed for safety.

When youngsters are learning more difficult gymnastics skills, the last thing they need to worry about is their landing. The red-and-blue foam cubes are there to cushion their fall.

But when owner Janine Walsh was contacted by UMass Lowell’s Toxics Use Reduction Institute, she was shocked to learn of the negative health impacts the flame retardant in the foam could have on the kids and staff. The family-operated gym has been in business for 40 years.
