Using Intelligent Efficiency to Collect and Analyze Nonenergy Benefits Information

Download the document.

In this report, we discuss how information technologies and communication networks are enabling new ways of tracking and analyzing the many benefits of saving energy. When stakeholders can quantify the coincident benefits of energy savings and put monetary value on them, they improve the accuracy of their cost-benefit analysis and increase the likelihood of projects getting funded. Automated data collection and processing, enabled by inexpensive sensors, WiFi networks, and cloud computing, are reducing the time and expense required to determine the value of nonenergy benefits. We explore new techniques for data gathering and analysis, what they could mean for energy efficiency programs, and how they might impact state and utility policies.
