Geology puts Decatur in unique positions

The Decatur area is in a unique position when it comes to numerous geological features.

An expert in groundwater and surface water topics sees the area taking some of the necessary steps to improve upon its position, including when it comes to preparing for the possibility of a record drought.

The need to urgently add additional water sources or reduce demand to provide adequate supply during such situations is being addressed through the dredging of Lake Decatur, said Edward Mehnert, a senior geohydrologist with the Illinois State Geological Survey.
