Scientists create global roadmap for roads

Road building is a popular choice for economists looking to boost a region’s trade and access to natural resources. By mid-century the world is set to have around 25 million km of new roads, bringing the total road length 60% higher than it was in 2010. But the introduction of roads can cause massive environmental damage. With this in mind, an international team has created a global roadmap for roads that shows where building the infrastructure would be seriously detrimental to ecosystems and should ideally be avoided, as well as where it could help boost food production.
