New Report on the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Benefits of Recycling and Composting

The West Coast Climate and Materials Management Forum recently released
a new report titled, Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions through
Recycling and Composting
.  Using EPA’s WARM calculator, the report
identifies four priority material types that offer significant emissions
reduction potential: carpet, core recyclables, dimensional lumber, and
food scraps.  The report also highlights additional benefits of
recycling and composting the priority materials, including job creation,
economic development, and reduced land and marine pollution.

An associated Climate Change and Materials Toolkit was also released to
help state and local governments map out how to incorporate material
conservation into their climate strategies, given that the material
sector accounts for approximately 42% of all domestic GHG emissions.

The Toolkit includes:

  • New approaches to GHG inventories that quantify impacts from materials
  • Model Climate Action Plans that include materials conservation
  • Innovative policies that can reduce material consumption and increase
  • recycling and composting
  • Example ordinances, standards, and policies to drive GHG reductions
  • through materials management
