Committee blocks limit on herbicide-linked carcinogen

Madison — Siding with the Monsanto Co. over recommendations by state agencies, an Assembly committee blocked the first proposed safety standard nationally for a cancer-causing herbicide byproduct found in 43% of wells in one survey.

If a joint Assembly-Senate committee that reviews state agency rules also objects to the first public health standard for alachlor-ESA, the Legislature could kill it outright by passing a new law or block it until the end of the next legislative session in 2008, officials said Wednesday.
